KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team competed against the national and Pac-12 powerhouse Stanford in an exhibition match on Monday. The Cardinal took all but one match in singles and swept the Rainbow Wahine in doubles action.
Hawai'i freshman
Jamie Pawid came up huge, recording the only Rainbow Wahine win as she defeated All-American and ITA's pre-season No. 12, Stacy Tan, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Last season, Tan fell in the NCAA Singles Championship match against Jana Juricova.
The Cardinal held their own against the Rainbow Wahine in doubles. Tan and Ellen Tsay swept
Xenia Suworowa and
Rebecca Faltusz, 8-0. The other two wins for Stanford came at 8-3. Taking the wins were Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs over
Katarina Poljakova and Pawid, and Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh defeated
Kelsey Daguio and
Aglae Van den Bergh.
The Rainbow Wahine will officially open their regular season on Jan. 5, 2012 when they take on Penn State at the UH Tennis Complex.
