HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team kicked off its season with the first day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
The Rainbow Wahine hosted local schools BYU-Hawai'i, Chaminade and Hawai'i Pacific with both singles and doubles competition. All eight Rainbow Wahine players were in action as UH swept their doubles matches 4-0 while going 5-3 in singles.
 
The Rainbow Wahine were dominant in doubles on the first day of competition. In the Black Fight, partners Barbara Pinterova and Jamie Pawid proved to be a formidable force defeating HPU's Ielyzaveta Rybakova and Lea Kruse-Uterman, 8-1 while Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa defeated Zora Vlckova and Celina Goetti from HPU, 8-4. The Green Flight saw Aglae Van den Bergh and Martina Kostalova knock off  HPU's Carrie Shuler and Thalia Wilcznynski, 8-3 while the duo of Rebecca Faltusz and Kelsey Daguio blanked the HPU pair of Amy Provost and Dominique Bushong 8-0.
 
The five Rainbow Wahine to advance in the singles competition were Poljakova, Pinterova, and Pawid in the Black Flight and Faltusz and Kostalova moving on in the Green Flight. The 'Bows singles matches was highlighted by Poljakova's thrilling comeback win over HPU's Rybakova. Poljakova dropped the first set 4-6 but came roaring back with a 6-1 win in the second set then outlasted Rybakova 10-8 in the super tie-breaker.
 
The three-day tournament continues Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
