HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept Idaho, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23). The Rainbow Wahine improve to 21-1 overall and 9-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, with the Vandals dropping to 11-11 and 5-4 in conference.
Hartong led the way for Hawai'i, recording 13 kills, six digs, and three blocks. Danielson posted 11 kills with
Brittany Hewitt and
Jane Croson both adding nine kills.
Alicia Milo did the damage for the Vandals, hitting a match-high 19 kills while also tallying eight digs.
Set one featured a tight contest, but Hawai'i seemingly had the win wrapped up when Hartong recorded a kill to give her team a 22-19 lead. But Idaho battled back, and after an Allison Walker (10 kills, 7 digs) kill, evened the set at 23-23. After a UH timeout, a Vandal service error coupled by block assists from Hewitt and
Kaela Goodman gave the 'Bows the set one win.
UH struggled to pull out a win in set two, but eventually prevailed to lead by two sets heading to intermission. UH held an early 10-6 lead but the Vandals responded to take a 14-12 advantage on a Milo kill. Idaho would increase its lead to 20-16, but a pair of Danielson kills helped the 'Bows even the score. With the set tied at 22-22, Croson rocketed a pair of kills and Hewitt hit a service ace to give UH the win.
Neither team led by more than two points in set three, as Hawai'i edged Idaho 25-23 to complete the sweep. The Vandals held a slim lead for most of the set and with Hawai'i trailing 21-20, Danielson recorded a kill and Hartong and Kalei Adolpho added block assists to give their team a lead they would not relinquish. Croson recorded kills for two of UH's final three points to help complete the sweep.
There were 6,078 tickets issued for the match, and a turnstile count of 4,309.
UH next takes to the road for its longest but final regular season WAC road trip. The 'Bows first play San Jose State on Tuesday, Oct 25, before playing Fresno State (Oct. 27) and Nevada (Oct. 29).
