SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team started action Thursday in the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Championships hosted by San Diego and San Diego State at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Nearly 100 players from a dozen West Coast schools are competing in the five-day tournament. All eight Rainbow Wahine saw action on the opening day in singles, while half of the doubles teams played matches in their draws on Thursday.

Freshman Jamie Pawid  and junior Katarina Poljakova are the only two Rainbow Wahine still alive and will play in the round of 32 on Friday morning. Pawid defeated Arizona's Susan McRann (6-3, 6-1) in the opening Round of 128. Later in the day, Pawid had a rough 0-6 opening set but battled back to defeat Sarah Cantlay from Long Beach State (0-6, 6-4, 6-1). Pawid will face the No. 14 seed Juliette Coupez (San Diego) on Friday at 10:00 am. The 12th seeded Poljakova had a bye in the first round and defeated  Sianna Simmons (Arizona State) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the Round of 32. Poljakova advances to play Laura Claus (USD) on Friday at 10:00 am.

Senior Barbara Pinterova won her opening match over Pepperdine's Tara Panu (6-2, 6-3), but fell in the Round of 64 to the second-seed, McCall Jones from UCLA (6-3, 6-2). Sophomore Xenia Suworovwa fell to Kiersten Meehan (UH Santa Barbara) in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. After dropping the first set, freshman Martina Kostalova battled to take the second, but eventually  fell in a Round of 64 three-set match to 13th-seeded Allison Ramos from USC (6-3, 4-6, 6-3). Freshmen Rebecca Faltusz and Kelsey Daguio and senior Aglae Van den Bergh all were eliminated in straight sets, but the six will all continue play in the consolation round which begins on Friday.

In doubles competition, two UH pairs saw action while the other two partners drew byes in the first round. The duo of Kelsey Daguio and Martina Kostalova cruised to an 8-0 win over CS Fullerton's Malorie De La Cruz and Jessica Peppa while Pinterova and Suworowa held off Idil Haciafoglu and Maria Raygada from San Diego, 8-6.
