Game Notes
SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when it faces nationally ranked Brigham Young on Saturday, Dec. 4. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. MT (1:00 HT) at the EnergySolutions Arena.
In their first road game of the season, the Rainbow Warriors suffered a heartbreaking 54-53 loss as Cal Poly won on a put-back as time expired. UH has now lost 12 straight road games dating back to 2009. Hawai'i has also dropped six straight non-conference tilts dating back to the 2007 season. The road doesn't get an easier as the 'Bows face No. 21 Brigham Young, their first AP ranked opponent in three years. The Cougars enter the game a perfect 7-0.
Hawai`i and BYU share a rich history. The former Western Athletic Conference rivals met each other more than 40 times between 1980-99 and went 10 years without playing each other before the Cougars defeated the 'Bows, 83-65, in a non-conference game in Honolulu last year. The last time the teams met in Salt Lake City, the 'Bows upset the Cougars, 73-66, for the 1994 WAC Tournament title.
There are also numerous coaching ties with the programs. UH head coach
Gib Arnold is a BYU graduate and the son of former BYU head coach Frank Arnold (1975-83), who won three WAC titles with the Cougars. UH associate coach Walter Roese also served on the BYU staff for six seasons (2001-07).
Following its game against BYU, UH will return home for five straight home games, starting with a meeting against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 11.
