No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Drop Heartbreaker To No. 10 California

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down, but dropped the fifth set in an exciting final match against No. 10 California, 3-2. UH finished the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic 1-2 after Sunday's final match.
 
No. 2 Texas won the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic with a 3-0 record. No. 10 California and No. 19 Saint Louis each finished 1-2. With a three-way tie, UH was named runner-up based on a tiebreaker system. Overall UH falls to 4-2 on the season.
 
Offensively sophomore Stephanie Ferrell led the way, recording a career-high 18 kills and adding nine digs. Kanani Danielson had 13 kills and 12 digs and Amber Kaufman added 12 kills and four blocks.
 
Senior Aneli Cubi-Otineru was named to the classic all-tournament team and finished Sunday with seven kills, nine digs and seven blocks. Dani Mafua set the offense with 45 assists and added eight digs.
 
In the opening set, UH took an early lead, but Cal rallied for a 25-21 victory. Ferrell and Kaufman each recorded three kills and Cubi-Otineru added two kills and four digs. UH only hit .118 in the set, while Cal hit .214 and had four blocks.
 
The Golden Bears took an early lead in the second set and went on to win 25-16. Ferrell had four kills in the set and Danielson added two kills. California's defense had four blocks in the set.
 
UH bounced back in the third set and won 25-20. Ferrell, Cubi-Otineru, Kaufman and Danielson each had three kills in the set. UH hit .333 for the set and had three blocks. Mafua set the offense with 13 assists and the defense had 11 digs.
 
The Rainbow Wahine continued their momentum into the fourth set, winning 25-17. Danielson and Ferrell each had five kills and Kaufman added four kills as UH hit .367 for the set. Mafua had 15 assists and the team had 10 digs.
 
In the fifth set, UH took an 8-6 lead at the break, but Cal came on strong, winning 15-11. Ferrell had three kills and Danielson and Kaufman added two kills in the final set.
 
Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic
No. 2 Texas 3, No. 19 Saint Louis 0
 
The Longhorns won the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 victory over the Billikens. Texas went 3-0 in the classic, while Saint Louis finished 1-2.
 
Juliann Faucette and Destinee Hooker each had 12 kills for Texas in the match and Jennifer Doris and Ashley Engle each added seven kills. Saint Louis was led by Megan Boken, who had 12 kills and nine digs.
