No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Drop First Match Against No. 2 Texas

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the season against No. 2 Texas Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center, in front of 8,657 fans in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic.
 
The Rainbow Wahine fall to 4-1 on the season and wrap up the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic Sunday at 5 p.m., against No. 10 California. Texas and No. 19 Saint Louis face each other at 3 p.m. Sunday.
 
UH was led offensively by sophomore Stephanie Ferrell, who had a team-high 11 kills. Kanani Danielson had nine kills and nine digs and Aneli Cubi-Otineru added nine kills and seven digs.
 
Senior Amber Kaufman had eight kills and Dani Mafua set the offense with 39 assists and added 10 digs.
 
The Longhorns took an early lead in the first set and never looked back. UH was led by Ferrell, who had four kills and Cubi-Otineru added two kills and had two digs. UH hit .121 in the set, while Texas hit .400.
 
In the second set, UH jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, and carried the lead to a 20-18 advantage. Texas rallied back and took the set 25-22. Kaufman had five kills and Danielson and Ferrell had three kills each in the set. Mafua had 12 assists and added four digs as UH had 13 kills in the set.
 
The Rainbow Wahine came out of the break strong and took the third set 25-22. Danielson had four kills in the set and added three digs and Cubi-Otineru had three kills and two aces. Alexis Forsythe came off the bench and started the set, recording three kills. UH hit .344 for the set as Mafua had 13 assists.
 
The Longhorns once again took an early lead in the fourth set and carried it to a 25-11 victory. Cubi-Otineru had three kills and Ferrell added two kills in the fourth set.
 
Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic
Saint Louis 3, California 0
 
In the first match Saturday, the Billikens swept the Golden Bears, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22, to earn their first victory in the classic. Overall No. 19 Saint Louis improves to 3-2, while No. 10 California falls to 2-3.
 
Saint Louis was led by Bridget Fonke, who had 14 kills and nine digs and Megan Boken had 12 kills and eight digs. The Billikens hit .296 for the match, including .487 in the third set.
 
California was led by Hana Cutura, who had a match-high 17 kills and added seven digs. Tarah Murrey added seven kills and Correy Johnson had five kills.
