No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Cruise Past Idaho, Earn Seventh Straight Win

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team picked up its seventh straight win Saturday night, beating Idaho 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 in front of 6,286 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine improve to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. UH has won seven straight matches by a score of 3-0. The Rainbow Wahine conclude their 13-match homestand and will hit the road for the first time this season next week.
 
UH had a balanced offensive attack, which was set up by Dani Mafua, who had 35 assists, four kills and five blocks in the match. Mafua helped set UH to a .640 hitting percentage in the second set, a season-high.
 
Sophomore Stephanie Ferrell had a match-high 12 kills and hit .417 for the match. Senior Aneli Cubi-Otineru had 11 kills, nine digs and three aces and Kanani Danielson had seven kills, eight digs and two blocks.
 
In the opening set, the Rainbow Wahine pulled away midway through and went on to win 25-13. Cubi-Otineru led the way with four kills and hit .571 for the set. Ferrell and Danielson each had three kills and Brittany Hewitt had two kills. The Rainbow Wahine also played solid defense, holding the Vandals to a -.094 hitting percentage and recording three blocks.
 
UH jumped out to a 15-3 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-11 victory. The Rainbow Wahine hit .640 as a team in the second set and had 17 kills with just one error on 25 attempts. Ferrell had six kills and Cubi-Otineru added four kills in the set. Amber Kaufman, Danielson and Hewitt each had two kills. The UH defense had two blocks and held Idaho to a .120 hitting percentage.
 
The third set both teams went back-and-forth early, before UH took the lead and went on to win 25-19. Alexis Forsythe came in the third set and had five kills on eight attempts and added three blocks. Ferrell and Cubi-Otineru each had three kills and Danielson and Kaufman added two kills.
 
The Rainbow Wahine hit the road for the first time next week, facing Louisiana Tech on Thursday, Oct. 1 in Ruston, La and New Mexico State on Saturday, Oct. 3 in Las Cruces, N.M.
