HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to No. 16 Fresno State in the WAC Tournament semifinals Friday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Despite the loss, the Rainbow Wahine (13-13) finished the season with its highest win total in eight years and advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history. Meanwhile, the top-seed Bulldogs continued to roll over the competition and improved to 21-5 on the year.
The two squads met exactly a week ago in Las Cruces, N.M., with the Bulldogs winning that regular-season matchup by a 6-1 count. This time around, Fresno State made quick work of UH, winning two of three doubles matches, then claiming a trio of straight-set matches in singles play for the win.
After notching the doubles point, the Bulldogs pulled away in singles play. Fresno State got a lead win from Bruna Paes over
Alyssa Nafarrete at the No. 6 court, 6-3, 6-1 and picked up a second singles point when Laura Pola defeated UH's lone senior
Melinda Wong 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, for the final match of Wong's career. The match concluded when No. 66 Renata Kucerkova took down
Anja-Vanessa Peter (UH) 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 court.
