LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team concluded its regular-season schedule with a 7-0 shutout of New Mexico State Sunday at the New Mexico State Tennis Center. UH improved to 12-12 overall and finished 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Aggies dropped to 10-12 overall and 4-4 in the WAC.
UH won two of three doubles matches for the first point and then swept all six matches to grab the victory. In doubles play the team of
Alyssa Nafarrete and
Ellen Linsenbolz defeated Isabela Kulaif and Stephanie Eusebe by an 8-6 count, while
Anja-Vanessa Peter and
Melinda Wong took down Laura Boguet and Natalia Salum Soto, 8-4.
The Rainbow Wahine swept through singles play with only a pair of tight matches. Linsenbolz, Peter, Wong and
Aglae Van den Bergh each won in straight sets. Meanwhile,
Sophie Kobuch rallied for a 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (5) win over Laura Boguet at the No. 2 court. Nafarrete also won in three sets. After dropping the first match, the freshman came back to pull of a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) win over Paulina Zuniga at the No. 6 position.
The Rainbow Wahine now return home to host the 2009 WAC Championships, April 23-26, at the UH Tennis Complex. Women's action will begin on Thursday, April 23 with the title match set for Saturday, April 25.
