HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team's five match winning streak came to an end. The Rainbow Wahine lost to Pac-10 and No. 64 Arizona, 6-1, Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 7-6 on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine dropped all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. UH had many chances to win the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. The duo of junior Sophie Kobuch and freshman Anja-Vanessa Peter was serving for the match with a 7-5 lead, but ended up losing 9-8(4) to the No. 75 team of Danielle Steinberg and Sarah Landsman at the No. 1 court. The team of senior Melinda Wong and freshman Alyssa Nafarrete had a match point with a 7-6 lead but ended up losing 9-7 at the No. 2 position.
In singles play, the Wildcats won five of the six matches to clinch the match victory. UH's lone victory came at the No. 5 court. Nafarrete earned a straight set 7-6(2), 6-1 victory over Jane Huh. Freshman Aglae Van den Bergh lost a close 7-5, 6-3 decision to Masschelein at the No. 4 court.
The Rainbow Wahine will continue their 11-match homestand on Wednesday, March 25, against Pac-10 powerhouse and No. 31 Washington. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. This will be the third straight match against a Pac-10 team.
