NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team earned their second victory of the 2009 season, dropping Cal State Northridge, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. UH improved to 2-4 on the season, both wins coming on the road.

The Rainbow Wahine won two of the three doubles matches at the No. 2 and 3 courts to earn the doubles point.  The duo of junior Sophie Kobuch and freshman Aglae Van den Bergh defeated Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova 8-4 at the No. 2 court. At the No. 3 position, the team of freshmen Alyssa Nafarrete and sophomore Natasha Zorec ousted Julie Onishenko and Whitney Paluch 8-5.

In singles play, UH won four of the six matches to clinch the dual match win. Freshman Anja-Vanessa Peter, senior Melinda Wong, and Kobuch came from behind to earn three set victories after losing the set. Kobuch beat Evgeniya Vertesheva, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 1 court. Peter outlasted Kamehameha Schools graduate Brooke Doane, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-1 at No. 3 and Wong powered past Paluch at the No. 4 court, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 6 position, Van den Bergh won convincingly in straight sets against Onishenko, 6-1, 6-0.

The Rainbow Wahine will conclude their five-match Southern California road trip on Monday against San Diego. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. at the USD West Tennis Courts.
