LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to national and Pac-10 powerhouse UCLA, Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UH falls to 1-4 on the season.
UCLA (7-2), ranked No. 8 in the latest ITA team rankings, earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The duo of junior Sophie Kobuch and freshman Aglae Van den Bergh dropped a tight 8-7(7) decision against Ashley Joelson and Maya Johansson at the No. 2 court.
In singles play, the Bruins won five of the six matches to clinch the dual match. UH's lone victory came at the No. 4 court. Senior Melinda Wong defeated Carling Seguso, 0-6, 6-3, ret. Seguso retired after Wong came back to win the second set. Freshman Anja-Vanessa Peter gave a valiant effort in her close 6-3, 7-5 loss to Joelson at the No. 3 position.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their five-match Southern California road trip on Sunday Feb. 22 against Cal State Northridge at the Matador Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
