SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a match that started almost two hours late because of inclement weather, the University of Hawai`i women's tennis team dropped a hard fought 5-1 match to UC Santa Barbara, Tuesday afternoon at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts. The Gauchos improve to 4-1 while UH falls to 0-3.
Due to the late start, both teams decided to not play doubles. UCSB won five of the six singles matches to earn the dual match victory. The match was a lot closer than the team score indicated as two of the matches that UH lost went three sets. The Rainbow Wahine's lone victory came at the No. 1 court. Junior Sophie Kobuch out lasted Michelle Murphy in three tough sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Freshman Anja-Vanessa Peter lost a heartbreaking match to Sofia Novak in the third set tie-breaker, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 3 position. Freshman Aglae Van den Bergh also dropped a tight three set match to Ratchaya Chaichanachaicharn at the No. 6 court, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their five-match Southern California road trip on Thursday against Cal State Fullerton. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
