HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened the first day of competition at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Thursday, at the UH Tennis Complex. Three singles players and two doubles team represented UH on day one of the tournament.
The tournament includes teams from Texas State, Hawai`i Pacific, and host UH and features both a singles and doubles format.
Rainbow Wahine duo
Alyssa Nafarrete and
Barbara Pinterova highlighted UH's efforts on the first day with a hard-fought, 9-7, doubles win over Andrea Giraldo and Gabriela Rijos of Texas State. Meanwhile the pair of
Dasha Lagmay and
Mari Tadaki played two doubles matches, dropping both. Lagmay and Tadaki fell to Mariana Perez and Saskia Kruse of Texas State, 8-1, before losing to Tinka Mihova and Nina Mihova of Hawai'i Pacific, 9-7.
In singles action, two of three Rainbow Wahine fell short, while freshman Tadaki won after her opponent retired. Amanda Alvarado of Texas State defeated Lagmay, 6-2, 6-3, and Giraldo took down Nafarrete, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, Tadaki took the first set and led 3-2 in the second set, before Texas State's Rojas withdrew.
The three-day tournament continues Friday, 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
