LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team won its ninth straight match, beating New Mexico State 25-21, 15-25, 25-22, 25-11 Saturday night in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Rainbow Wahine swept its first road trip of the season and improve to 13-2 on the season and 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference play.
UH was led by
Kanani Danielson, who had a match-high 21 kills and hit .390 for the match. Danielson also added seven digs and two blocks.
In the opening set, UH jumped out to an 8-3 lead, and held off a late rally by New Mexico State to win 25-21. Danielson led the way with five kills in the set and Cubi-Otineru added three kills. Ferrell and
Amber Kaufman had two kills each and Cubi-Otineru added seven digs. The UH defense had 22 digs and two blocks.
The Rainbow Wahine fell behind 5-1 to open the set and could never recover, falling 25-15. Danielson and Ferrell led the way with four kills each in the set. Ferrell had four kills on five swings and as a team UH hit .308, up from the first set. The Rainbow Wahine also added three blocks.
In the third set, both teams went back-and-forth, until UH scored the final three points to win 25-22. Danielson had seven kills in the set, including two kills and a solo block for UH's final three points of the set. Mafua had 11 assists and two kills in the set and Elizabeth Ka'aihue had five digs.
UH took and early lead and never looked back in the fourth set, cruising to a 25-11 win. Danielson had five kills in the set and Ferrell added four kills. UH hit .571 in the set and recorded four blocks as a tem.
The Rainbow Wahine return home to the Stan Sheriff Center for a five-match homestand, beginning Oct. 8 against Nevada. UH will face San Jose State the following night, Oct. 9, with both matches beginning at 7 p.m.
