HONOLULU – The third-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept BYU-Hawai'i, 25-14, 25-11, 25-17 in a non-conference match Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine won their 14th straight match and improved to 18-2 on the season. UH returns to WAC play next week on the road.
UH wore pink uniforms Friday night, which were donated by Asics, for the first time this season in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Prior to the match, the annual alumnae match was held, with over 40 former Rainbow Wahine participating in the match. Following the match, head coach
Dave Shoji was honored by former alumnae in attendance and a celebration followed for Shoji earning his 1,000
th victory last week.
Offensively Friday night,
Kanani Danielson had 11 kills and hit .435 for the match, while
Stephanie Ferrell had 10 kills and hit .412 for the match. Ferrell's 10 kills came in two sets.
In the first set UH cruised to a 25-14 victory. The Rainbow Wahine hit .516 for the set and had a balanced offensive attack. Ferrell had five kills and hit .833, while Kaufman, Danielson and Cubi-Otineru had four kills each.
Dani Mafua set the offense with 18 assists.
The Rainbow Wahine won the second set 25-11, hitting .533 as a team. Cubi-Otineru had five kills, while Kaufman and Danielson each had four kills.
Alexis Forsythe had three kills off the bench and
Corinne Cascioppo added two kills. Mafua once again set the offense with 14 assists.
UH mixed up the lineup in the third set and went on to win 25-17. Ferrell had five kills and Forsythe and Cascioppo each had three kills in the set.
The Rainbow Wahine hit the road for three matches next week, beginning Thursday, Oct. 29 at Fresno State. Thursday's match against the Bulldogs will be live on ESPNU, beginning at 8:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. HT).
