Nafarrete follows through after hit

Nafarette Leads the Way at ITA Southwest Regionals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team opened tournament play today at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
 
The pair of Rainbow Wahine who represented Hawai'i, played very well with UH sophomore Alyssa Nafarrete leading the way.  Nafarrete went undefeated in singles action today with two impressive victories. In her first match of the day, Nafarrete defeated Maria Raygada from host San Diego 6-4,6-3 and moved on to play Roxanne Ellison from San Diego State. Nafarrete defeated Ellison in three sets 2-6,6-4,6-3 and plays Kelcy Mckenna from Arizona State tomorrow. Mckenna is seeded number one in the tournament singles draw and is ranked No. 7 by the ITA Women's preseason rankings.
 
The other half of the pair, Mari Tadaki, lost her match today to Naseem Eslami from San Diego State in straight sets. Tadaki isn't done playing yet, she moves on to play in the consolation bracket against Lise Marbach from San Diego tomorrow.
 
In doubles action, the team of Nafarrete and Tadaki were defeated 8-4 by Kelsy McKenna and Sianna Simmons of Arizona State who are seed No. 4 in the doubles draw. The Rainbow Wahine will move on to play in the consolation bracket of the doubles draw against Justine Perl and Maja Sujica of San Diego tomorrow.
