HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team opened the 2009 spring season with a tight 4-3 loss to San Diego State, Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Aztecs began the match winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. UH's lone win came at the No. 3 court where junior Sophie Kobuch and freshman Aglae Van den Bergh dropped Ester Cadua and Kathryn Kitts, 8-3. San Diego State won the other two doubles matches by the score of 8-5.
In singles play, the Rainbow Wahine won three of the six matches, to fall just short of the dual match victory. Kobuch earned a straight sets win over Julia Trunk at the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-3. Freshmen Anja-Vanessa Peter and Van den Bergh earned their first, singles dual match victories of the season in straight set fashion. Peter slid past Cadua, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 and Van den Bergh outplayed Sierra Ellison, 6-2, 6-4.
The Rainbow Wahine will next play No. 65 UC Irvine tomorrow, Jan. 30. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
