UH-BYU To Renew Football Rivalry In 2012 & 2013

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i and Brigham Young University have agreed to a home-and-home football series beginning 2012, UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan and BYU Athletics Director Tom Holmoe announced today. The Warriors and Cougars were former Western Athletic Conference rivals and have not played in football since 2002.

The teams will meet on Sept. 8, 2012 in Provo, Utah, and again on Sept. 14, 2013 at Aloha Stadium.

“Playing BYU has always been a thrill for our fans as well as our coaches and players,” Donovan said. “I'm very pleased we were able to work out an agreement and continue this friendly rivalry.”

“It's great to rekindle the rivalry with Hawai'i,” Holmoe said. “Over the years the tradition has included fantastic players, coaches, teams and games. Add in terrific fans and stadiums and you have the ingredients of an excellent match up.”

The teams first met on Dec. 10, 1930, in Honolulu with Hawai'i winning 49-13. The schools have played 27 times over the years with BYU winning the last contest 35-32 on Sept. 6, 2002, in Provo. The Cougars lead the overall series 19-8.
