Robinson Pitches, Powers Rainbow Wahine Past Fresno State

HONOLULU - University of Hawai`i senior Kate Robinson pitched a complete game and hit a two-run home run as the UH softball team beat Fresno State 6-1 in the consolation bracket to stay alive in the WAC Tournament. It was her 19th home run of the season and it tied the single-season UH record she set last season.

Robinson gave up one run in the first inning before shutting down Fresno State for the next six innings. It was also Robinson's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning that gave UH a 2-1 lead and helped open the offensive explosion by the Rainbow Wahine.

With the win, UH (38-18) advances to the second consolation game of the day against Nevada at 7 p.m. Friday night. Nevada, the No. 1 seed, lost to Louisiana Tech earlier in the day. With the loss Fresno State (51-11) was eliminated from the tournament. The winner of Friday night's game will face Louisiana Tech in the championship Saturday. The Lady Techsters would have to lose twice Saturday.

In the third inning, after Robinson hit a deep two-run home run to centerfield, the Rainbow Wahine added two more runs. After a single and two walks, Katie Grimes drew a walk to score one run and Tanisha Milca followed with a single to score the fourth run of the inning.

UH tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead they would never surrender. Clare Warwick drove in the fourth inning run with a single to left field and Kaulana Gould added the fifth inning run with a single to right field.

For the game, Brandi Pieler and Warwick each went 3-for-4 and Robinson and Milca each went 2-for-4. As a team UH tallied 13 hits, while Robinson held Fresno State to three hits.

Robinson improved to 17-7 on the season, while Fresno State's Morgan Melloh picked up the loss and fell to 39-7.
