Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (27-29) closed out its regular season with a 2-0 loss to the Utah Valley Wolverines (17-36-1) in front of a sellout crowd of 4,452 at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Marcus Moore (10-5) capped a great year for the Wolverines, pitching a complete-game three-hitter to get the win for UVU. Matt Daly (5-4) pitched well, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts, but took the loss.

Evan Zimny, Derek DuPree and Greg Garcia were the only Rainbow players to get hits off of Moore in the game.

Utah Valley got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring the game's first run on a squeeze bunt by Jake Rickenbach. Hawai`i looked to respond in the bottom of the inning as they had a hit and two walks. But the Wolverines turned a double play and and ground out to keep UH off the board.

The Wolverines added another run in the sixth. With one out and runners on first and third, Cory Kahn forced a ground ball to second, but UVU's Tyler Garretson beat out the play at first to push the Wolverines' lead to 2-0.

The 'Bows made one last attempt at a rally in the bottom of the ninth, drawing two walks to put runners on first and second with one out. But Moore settled down, striking out the game's final two batters to give Utah Valley the 2-0 win.

Hawai`i will now head out for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Ruston, La., playing on Thursday, May 22. Seedings and gametimes will be determined after the conference's final games are played tomorrow.
