HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (27-28) defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines (16-36-1) 9-6 in front of a crowd of 2,609 at Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
Joshua Schneider (5-2) got the victory, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Aaron Brady took the loss for UVU.
Brandon Haislet led UH, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, a home run and a double. Jonathan Hee also went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a run and a double while Kevin Fujii went 2-for-3 with a run. Greg Garcia had a triple, two RBI and two runs while Matt Roquemore scored three runs with one RBI and three walks.
Hawai`i got on the board early as Haislet drove in a run in the first inning to give UH the 1-0 edge. Haislet then led off the fourth with a solo home run to left field. Roquemore drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning, pushing the Rainbow lead to 3-0.
Utah Valley responded in the top of the sixth scoring on back-to-back singles to cut it back to 3-2. But Hawai`i mounted a four-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, as Garcia hit a two-run single before Hee and Haislet drove in a run each, pushing the UH lead back to 7-2.
The Wolverines pulled it close again in the seventh, scoring three runs on just one hit, to get UVU within two runs at 7-5. But Hee and Haislet came up big again in the bottom of the eighth, posting back-to-back RBI-singles to pad the 'Bows' lead to 9-5.
Jace Brinkerhoff hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Hawai`i held on to the 9-6 win.
The Rainbows close out the regular season tomorrow with the senior night game at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium, honoring the team's nine seniors.
