HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team won its second straight match of the 2008 season with a 5-1 victory over NAIA powerhouse Azusa Pacific, Wednesday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-14) secured five of the six singles matches to capture the dual match. Winners included sophomore Sophie Kobuch, senior Chloe Bihag, freshmen Natasha Zorec and Jennifer Goldman, and sophomore Marie Tanaka.
Kobuch won a three-set match by overpowering Bay Daniels, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 court, while Bihag dropped Casey Wetzeg, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 position. Zorec blew past Katy Jelsma in two easy sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 court. Goldman beat Kim Tran in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-2 at No. 5, and Tanaka crushed Lindsey Cloninger at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2.
The match featured two rain delays. Because of the weather, both teams decided to play singles first and not play doubles.
The Rainbow Wahine will next play four matches on the road, beginning on Saturday, April 12 against WAC powerhouse and No. 16 Fresno State. UH will also play No. 37 St. Mary's on April 13, Eastern Washington on April 15, and fellow WAC foe, Idaho on April 16.
