SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (12-19, 4-6 WAC) beat the San Jose State Spartans (14-12, 5-8) 12-5 in the first game of the doubleheader at Municipal Stadium Saturday.
Cory Kahn (1-0) got the win, going 4.1 innings, allowing just one run. Max Peterson (2-3) took the loss for the Spartans.
Jeffrey Van Doornum went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles and two runs. Jonathan Hee went 4-for-5 with two runs while Derek DuPree going 4-for-6 with two runs. Brandon Haislet was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs while Kevin Macdonald was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Greg Garcia also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Hawai`i jumped out early, as Haislet hit a two-run single before scoring on a double by Van Doornum, giving the 'Bows a 3-0 lead after the first half inning of play. UH added three more runs in the top of the third, one driven in by Hernandez with the other two aided by a Spartan error, making it 6-0.
Van Doornum later drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, pushing UH's lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning. But the Spartans came right back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to get it back to 7-4. The damage could've been worse, but Hee caught a line drive with the bases loaded, then flipped over to second to get the inning-ending double play.
The Rainbows added a run in the top of the fifth to get it to 8-4. Garcia drove in two runs later in the eighth to get their advantage to 10-4.
SJSU added a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth. Van Doornum then responded with a RBI-double in the top of the ninth before scoring on a single by Macdonald, making the final score 12-5.
The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
