'Bows Fall Victim To Pitching Gem, Losing 4-0 At San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (12-20, 4-7 WAC) fell to the San Jose Spartans (15-12, 6-8) 4-0 in the second game of the doubleheader at Municipal Stadium Saturday. Nicholas Rhodes (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs in 7.0 innings pitched. Ryan Shopshire (5-0) had a career performance, pitching the complete-game shutout to get the victory.

Sean Montplaisir went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Hawai`i. Derek DuPree and Jeffrey Van Doornum were the only other Rainbows to get hits in the game.

Rhodes pitched 4.1 perfect innings, before allowing a triple and back-to-back singles in the fifth, putting Hawai`i behind 1-0. The Spartans then scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to get it to 3-0.

SJSU added a run on a fielding error by the 'Bows in the bottom of the eighth, while Shopshire continued to baffle Hawai`i en route to the 4-0 San Jose State victory.

The two teams will conclude their series with a game tomorrow at 1 p.m. (10 a.m. HST).
