Warriors Improve But Remain In Ninth After Second Day At WAC Championships

Day Two Results

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Warrior golf team (324-309-633) shave 15 strokes off their first round total, but remain in ninth after two days at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club Tuesday.

Robert Berton (76-75-151) continues to lead the Warriors, tying for 12th thus far. Ryan Perez (85-74-159) came back to move into a tie for 29th. Kamden Brakel (86-76-162) is in 40th with Cody Pewarchuk (81-84-165) in 44th. Kyle Walters was forced to withdraw during the second round.

"We had a couple of kids improve," said Head Coach Ronn Miyashiro. "But we're a few lengths behind. After three holes, we lost a leg of the horse (when Walters withdrew). So we didn't have a throw-out score. I'm enthusiastic to see that we improved. Hopefully we can finish strong in the last round and get ourselves out of the cellar."

New Mexico State continues to lead the way at 12-over-par. Boise State (+15) is just three strokes back, followed by Fresno State (+25), Louisiana Tech (+37), Nevada and San Jose State (+39), Idaho (+45), Utah State (+51) and UH (+57).

Boise State's Troy Merritt took over the individual lead at six-under-par. He's followed by teammate Matt Hastings and Fresno State's Grant Doverspike (-1), and Joshua Stewart (E) and Kevin Lozares (+2) of New Mexico State.

The tournament finishes tomorrow with the final round. Tee times begin at 7:00 a.m.
