Rainbows Fall To Sacramento State 5-2 In Second Half Of Doubleheader

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-18, 2-5 WAC) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (9-14, 4-3) 5-2 in the second game of the doubleheader at Hornet Field Saturday. Josh Slaats (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs in 3.2 innings.

Jonathan Hee went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run to lead UH. Shane Hoey added a 2-for-4 game with one RBI while Derek DuPree also was 2-for-4.

Hawai`i got on the board early as Hee led off the game with a triple. Morford then drove him in on the next at bat to give the 'Bows a 1-0 edge after the first inning. Sacramento State tied the game in the bottom of the second and had a great chance to take the lead later in the inning, loading the bases with just one out. But Slaats induced a pop up before Landon Hernandez picked off the runner at third to keep the score tied at 1-1.

The Hornets would later take the lead with a single run in the fourth. They then got three runs in the fifth on a three-run homer by Gabe Jacobo, getting the score to 5-1.

Hoey drove in a run in the top of the sixth to cut back the lead to 5-2. But that was as close as UH would get, as the Hornets made some great defensive plays down the stretch to keep the three-run difference.

The two teams will close out their four-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (10 a.m. HST).
