SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-17, 2-4 WAC) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (8-14, 3-3) 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Hornet Field Saturday.
Nicholas Rhodes (1-3) took the loss for UH while Trevor York (1-4) got the win for the Hornets. Brandon Sandoval earned the save for Sacramento State.
Jeffrey Van Doornum went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jonathan Hee had a 3-for-5 day with a run. Derek DuPree added a 2-for-4 game with one run while Ryan Morford went 2-for-5 with one RBI. Alex Capaul pitched well in relief, allowing just one earned run in 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Sacramento State jumped ahead with a big shot in the first inning, as Tim Wheeler hit a grand slam to right field with two outs, putting Hornets ahead 4-0.
Macdonald drove in a run in the fourth to get Hawai`i on the board. Van Doornum would drive in another run on a RBI-single in the sixth, cutting it back to a 4-2 ballgame.
The Hornets responded in the bottom of the sixth as Taylor Watanabe drove in a run before Brandon Haislet threw out the next runner at home plate, keeping it a 5-2 game.
The Rainbows had a great opportunity to do some damage in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. But UH only got one run out of the inning, keeping them behind 5-3.
The Hornets got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. But UH still had a chance to make noise in the ninth. The 'Bows rallied with two outs, as Morford drove in DuPree, leaving Hawai`i down just two runs with runners on the corners. But Sandoval was able to get the final out, giving Sac State the 6-4 win.
The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
