'Bows Drop Series Opener At Sacramento State 4-2

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-16, 2-3 WAC) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (7-14, 2-3) 4-2 in the series opener at Hornet Field Friday. Jared Alexander (3-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 7.1 innings. Jeff Roth (1-1) got the win in relief for the Hornets.

Kevin Macdonald went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk. Jeffrey Van Doornum and Brandon Haislet both went 1-for-3 with a run.

The Rainbows avoided a threat in the bottom of the fourth as Macdonald fielded a ball at first, stepped on the bag to get the batter before throwing out a runner at home plate, keeping the game scoreless.

But that didn't last long as Jeff Hannah blasted a home run to start the fifth inning, making it 1-0. The Hornets then added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a slow roller with the bases loaded, giving them a 2-0 edge.

Hawai`i's offense came alive in the top of the seventh. Haislet led off with a single. After two Rainbows walked, Macdonald hit a two-run single to left, tying the game at 2-2.

Sacramento State broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth as Gabe Jacobo hit a double, bringing in a run. Another run would score on the play on an error, making it 4-2.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. (8 a.m. HST).
