Rainbow Wahine Win Sixth Straight, 11-8 Over SJSU

HONOLULU - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team defeated ninth-ranked San Jose State, 11-8, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Freshman Carmen Eggens scored a match-high three goals to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Kelly Mason, Lisa van Raalte, Angela Turnbull and Leoni Van Der Molen also scored two goals apiece.

Freshman Serena Bredin had seven saves in two plus quarters in goal before being replaced by Sara Gralitzer in the third. Gralitzer closed out the match with three saves to preserve the victory.

Eggens and Turnbull scored two goals each and van Raalte scored once giving UH a 7-3 lead at the half. At 5:52 in the third quarter, Mason scored on a penalty shot, which gave the Rainbow Wahine a five-point lead. Hawai`i led 10-5 late in the third quarter, but the Spartans made a comeback with two goals, narrowing the score to 10-7 entering the final period. Van Der Molen scored the final goal in the fourth quarter giving Hawai'i the 11-8 win.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their homestand with a MPSF match against No. 2 Stanford on Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
