Rainbow Wahine Win Home Opener, 11-5, Over UCSB

HONOLULU - The fifth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team defeated 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara 11-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. In their home opener, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF.

Junior Kelly Mason had a match-high three goals. Juniors Lisa van Raalte and Angela Turnbull scored two goals each. Senior Anna Sieprath, sophomore Maxie Groh, and freshmen Samantha Motekaitis and Saara Majuri also scored one goal a piece.

Freshman Serena Bredin had seven saves and was replaced by freshman Sara Gralitzer, who finished the match with four saves in the fourth quarter.

Hawai`i's seven-goal lead dwindled to 9-5 in the fourth quarter after UCSB answered with three straight goals. The Rainbow Wahine shut out the Gauchos the rest of the way and scored two more goals to close out the match.
