IRVINE, Calif. - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team defeated No. 11 UC Davis, 6-5, in the fifth place match Sunday at the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational at Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (9-3) concluded the tournament by winning three of four matches.
Junior Angela Turnbull led all scorers with three goals. Senior Anna Sierpath, junior Lisa van Raalte and freshman Carmen Eggens scored one goal each.
Freshman Serena Bredin also made 10 stops during the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Hawai`i carried a 2-1 lead at the half and scored three goals in the third quarter to build a 5-2 cushion. Although the Aggies outscored UH 3-1 in the final quarter, the Rainbow Wahine held on for the one-goal victory and fifth-place finish.
Earlier in the day, UH edged Loyola Marymount, 8-7 in a consolation round match.
Hawai`i will take the next three weeks off before facing UC Santa Barbara at home on March 15 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
