NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team beat No. 12 Long Beach State, 10-6, Saturday in the first round of the UC Irvine Invitational at Corona del Mar High School. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 7-2 overall.
Junior Lisa van Raalte led UH in scoring with three goals, followed by freshman Carmen Eggens and sophomore Leoni Van Der Molen who each scored two goals.
Freshman goalie Serena Bredin also made seven stops for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai'i led at the half 6-1 and went on to score four times in the second half. The Rainbow Wahine were able to hold on to the win despite a comeback by the 49ers who scored four goals in the final period.
Hawai'i will play later today in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. at Corona del Mar High School against the winner of the California and UC Santa Barbara game.
