TEMPE, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team held on to a 13-12 victory over No. 8 Arizona State Wednesday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Junior Kelly Mason led the UH attack with six goals, including three of the team's four first quarter scores. Senior Anna Sieprath added a hat trick while freshman Carmen Eggens had two goals.
Addison McGrath had a school-record seven goals for the Sun Devils (8-5, 0-2).
Freshman goalie Serena Bredin had seven stops for the Rainbow Wahine, three of which came in the decisive fourth quarter as UH held off the Sun Devils.
UH trailed 8-7 at the half after surrendering six second quarter goals. Behind Bredin, the Rainbow Wahine shutout Arizona State 3-0 in the third and entered the final period with a 10-8 advantage.
Hawai'i will next compete in the UC Irvine Invitational this weekend. The Rainbow Wahine are scheduled to open with Long Beach State on Saturday.
