UH Falters In Opening Round Of Rainbow Classic

Roderick Flemings looks to pass against Colorado State
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team suffered a disappointing 74-58 loss in the opening round of the 45th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The 'Bows dropped to 6-4 overall, while seeing its three-game win streak and six-game home win streak come to a close.
 
The 'Bows failed to advance to the championship bracket of the Rainbow Classic for the second straight year. Prior to that UH advanced to the semifinals 11 consecutive seasons. It was also the second time in the last four years that Colorado State handed UH a loss in the Rainbow Classic. The Rams also defeated UH in the semifinals of the 2005 edition. 
 
Hawai`i will now face George Washington on Monday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the consolation bracket. Colorado State, meanwhile, will square off against Vermont in a semifinal pairing at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Vermont defeated George Washington, 83-72, in the tournament's opening game.
 
UH had its worst offensive performance of the year, shooting a season-low 33 percent, while also committing 18 turnovers. The 'Bows led 36-34 at halftime, but mustered just 6-of-23 shooting (26 percent) after the break and were out-scored, 40-22.
 
Roderick Flemings led UH with 22 points and shot 6-of-11 from the field, but the rest of the team struggled, shooting for a combined 11-41 (27 percent). The Rainbow Warriors also missed  13 of their 15 three-point attempts.
 
Marcus Walker led four Rams in double figures with 14 points. Colorado State (4-8) snapped a six-game losing streak with the win.
 
First round action in the Rainbow Classic continues Sunday, Dec. 28, with Pepperdine-Buffalo at 5 p.m. and Colorado-Coppin State at 7:30 p.m.
