WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i –University of Hawai'i sophomore
Dennis Lajola advanced to the second round of the main draw of the USTA Waikoloa Futures, Wednesday, at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort.
Lajola came back and outlasted Chris Wettengel in an exciting, tight, three-set victory, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. The sophomore is the lone Rainbow Warrior left in the main draw and will now face Chase Buchanan in the round of 16. Lajola is ranked No. 89 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
In other singles action, freshman
Leo Rosenberg lost a close, 7-5, 7-5 decision to Andrey Kumantsov of Russia. UH junior
Andreas Weber dropped a 7-6(6), 6-1 match to Sheeva Pahbhu.
In doubles play, the duo of Lajola and Rosenberg lost to the team of Chase Buchanan and Ty Trombetta in the first round, 6-3, 6-4.
Eight of the nine Rainbow Warriors were represented in the USTA's Pro Circuit singles and doubles tournament. The pro circuit tournament continues throughout the week.
