SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team continued tournament play at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region Championships, Friday, at the Barnes Tennis Center. Five singles players and two doubles teams represent UH in this tournament.
In doubles play, the team of freshman
Alyssa Nafarrete and sophomore
Natasha Zorec advanced to the round of 16 by ousting Sarah Landsman and Ariane Masschelein of Arizona, 8-4. Nafarrete and Zorec will next compete against the No. 1 seeded team of Nadia and Laila Abdala of Arizona State. The duo of junior
Sophie Kobuch and freshman
Anja-Vanessa Peter fell to Ali Waters and Andrea Remynse of tennis powerhouse UCLA, 8-5.
In singles action, Kobuch and Nafarrete lost in the round of 32 of the main singles draw. Kobuch, seeded No. 11 and ranked No. 69 in the ITA singles rankings, was upset by Audrey Bulkey of Loyola Marymount, 7-6, 6-3. Nafarrete dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to sixth-seeded Maya Johansson of UCLA.
In consolation singles play, senior
Melinda Wong advanced to the fourth round by cruising past Erin Wiesener of USC in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Peter won her second round match before losing in the third round. Peter crushed Elizabeth Marsico of USC, 6-0, 6-2, but next lost to Michelle Murphy of UC Santa Barbara in a heartbreaking three-set marathon, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0(9). Zorec was outlasted by Clare Fermin of UC Irvine in a tight three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(8).
The five-day individual singles and doubles tournament includes players from 16 West Region teams. The tournament continues throughout the week.
