LOGAN, Utah – The No. 9 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (14-3, 7-1 WAC) swept through the Utah State Aggies (6-13, 4-4) 25-18, 25-18 and 25-18 to start the road trip at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Thursday.
Jamie Houston and Kanani Herring led the way for UH, both hitting .391 with 12 kills each. Houston added eight digs and three blocks while Herring had three digs, three blocks and an ace.
Dani Mafua had 37 assists, six digs, two kills and two aces, while
Amber Kaufman and
Catherine Fowler led Hawai`i at the net with four blocks each.
Utah State jumped ahead 4-2 to start the match before Houston and Herring combined for three kills to put Hawai`i ahead 5-4. That started a back-and-forth battle with UH taking a slight 15-14 edge at the media timeout on a solo block by Mafua. The Rainbow Wahine continue to roll out of the break, scoring the next three to get the lead to 18-14. UH kept the lead the rest of the way, taking the first set 25-18.
Hawai`i kept the momentum at the start of the second set, taking a 7-3 lead early on. USU responded with 6-2 run to tie it up at 9-9. UH took back the lead and ran it to 15-11 after 5-1 run. And the Rainbow Wahine never looked back, finishing off the Aggies 25-18.
After giving up the first point of the third set, the Rainbow Wahine used a four-point run to take control early. UH got its lead to 7-2 and 13-5 before a 4-1 USU run pulled it back to 14-9. Hawai`i got their advantage to 18-11, only to see a 4-0 Aggie run pull it back to 18-15. But UH wouldn't let it go as an ace by Mafua ended the match with a 25-18 win in set three.
The Rainbow Wahine continue this road trip with a match at Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. (4 p.m. HST).
