St. Mary's Slips Past Rainbow Warrior Tennis, 4-3

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team lost another close 4-3 decision, this time to St. Mary's, Saturday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 0-3 on the 2008 season.

In singles play, UH junior Sascha Heinemann outlasted St. Mary's Joel Kusierz in the third set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(5), at the No. 1 court. Rainbow Warrior sophomore Andreas Weber, ranked No. 25 in the latest ITA singles rankings, crushed Marek Dvorak in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Jeff Fitch overpowered Achim Christner in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 position.

In doubles play, the Rainbow Warriors lost the doubles point by winning only one of the three matches. The duo of Fitch and sophomore Spence Mendoza beat Christner and Lucas Tirelli at the No. 2 court, 8-3. With only five players, the Rainbow Warriors forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

The Rainbow Warriors will next play against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
