HPU Men, BYU Women Capture Big Wave Titles; UH's Wilder Wins Again

KANE`OHE, O`ahu - University of Hawai`i women's cross country runner Chantelle Wilder made it three-for-three this season by capturing the Big Wave Invitational title Saturday morning at the Kane`ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base Hawai`i. By winning for the third time this season and second consecutive Big Wave Invite, Wilder now has seven career individual titles.

Wilder finished the 4K women's course in 14:34 to pace the Rainbow Wahine, who finished third overall in the team standings. UH's top five finishers included Wilder, Tava Tedesco (15:48, 17th), Samantha Lotnick (16:22, 26th), Jessi Locke (16:33, 33rd), and Annett Wichmann (17:15, 40th).

Brigham Young captured the women's team title with 20 points with its top five finishers claiming the Nos. 2-6 spots. In all, seven Cougars placed in the Top 10. San Diego State took second (60 pts.) followed by UH (104), Hawai`i-Hilo (111), BYU-Hawai`i (119), Saint Mary's (137), and Hawai`i Pacific (141). Chaminade fielded only four runners and did not post a team score.

On the men's side, HPU's Jens Munk Nielsen took top individual honors, completing the 5K race in 16:29. Nielsen and his Sea Warrior teammates captured the team title with 42 points followed by BYU (52), UH-Hilo (52), Saint Mary's (66), and Chaminade (119).

The race, hosted annually by UH, was held in near-perfect conditions on the Windward side of the island. The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational, Sept. 29, in Salem, Ore.
