HONOLULU - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (8-3, 2-0 WAC) swept the Boise State Broncos (3-7, 0-2) 30-28, 30-22 and 30-24 in front of a crowd of 6,642 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.
Tara Hittle had six kills and 12 digs while Jamie Houston posted 14 kills and seven digs. Stephanie Brandt added 42 assists and seven digs while Aneli Cubi-Otineru finished with 12 kills.
Hawai`i ran off five-straight points on Hittle's serve to break at 13-13 tie in game one. UH got it to 20-14 and 24-18 before Boise State started to make a run. BSU went on a 5-0 run to get it to 24-23, only to see UH run off five straight and get to game point at 29-24. The Broncos answered with four points to get it to 29-28 before a kill by Houston ended the first game 30-28.
The Broncos again held an early 10-9 lead in game two, only to see a seven-point run on Amber Kaufman's serve put Hawai`i ahead 15-10. UH controlled the rest of the way, taking the second game 30-22.
The Rainbow Wahine again looked sluggish at the start of game three, falling bak 14-8 after five-straight hitting errors. An ace by Brandt capped a run of 8-1, giving UH back the lead at 16-15. But Boise State answered the call again, scoring five in a row to hold a 20-16 edge. But Hawai`i finally answered the call, scoring 14 of the final 18 points of game three to win it 30-24.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head out on their first road trip for three conference matches at Louisiana Tech (Sept. 20), New Mexico State (Sept. 22) and San Jose State (Sept. 24). UH leaves Tuesday, Sept. 18, and will not play at home again until Oct. 5.
