No. 10 Rainbow Wahine Shocked By Oregon State In ASICS Invitational

HONOLULU - The No. 10 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (1-2) fell to the Oregon State Beavers (2-1) 31-33, 21-30 and 26-30 in front of a crowd of 6,134 in the ASICS Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday.

Jamie Houston led UH with 16 kills and two blocks. Aneli Otineru added nine kills and six digs while Juliana Sanders had eight kills. Stephanie Brandt added 34 assists and seven kills.

The Rainbow Wahine started the match well in game one as an ace by Amber Kaufman put UH ahead 7-5. Hawai`i was able to get their lead to 14-9 before OSU made a 7-1 run that put them ahead 16-15. The two teams then traded small runs until two blocks and a kill by Houston pushed the Rainbow Wahine to game point at 29-26. But the Beavers fought back, scoring four-straight points to get their own game point at 30-29. Houston then responded with back-to-back kills to give UH their fourth game point at 31-30. Jill Sawatzky tied it with a kill before Rachel Rourke put away back-to-back blocks to give the Beavers the 33-31 victory.

Oregon State used the momentum of their comeback to shoot out to an 8-3 edge at the start of game two. Hawai`i got as close as three points on a couple occasions, last at 23-20 on an ace by Cubi-Otineru, before OSU went on a 7-1 run to end it at 30-21.

Hawai`i put up a bigger fight in the third game, as neither team held a lead of more than two points unil a late 3-0 by the Beavers put them ahead 23-19. Back-to-back kills by Cubi-Otineru got it back to 23-21 before OSU went on a 4-1 run that made it 27-22. UH fought off a couple game points before a service error by Amanda Simmons ended the match at 30-26.

The Rainbow Wahine will next host Kansas State, Louisville and UCLA in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic starting Friday, Aug. 31.
