HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team snapped its five-match losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the NAIA's third-ranked team Azusa Pacific, Monday, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (5-15) captured all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests.
For the third consecutive match, UH got the early advantage by winning the doubles point in relative easy fashion. The team of Chloe Bihag and Florence Wasko captured their third straight doubles win with an 8-1 rout of Jennifer Dao and Kim Tran.
The Rainbow Wahine used that momentum into singles play as four of their five wins were in straight sets. In addition, newcomer Julia Hodes won for the second time in three matches with a super tie-breaker win over Dao, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (3). Freshman Sophie Kobuch and seniors Kana Aikawa, Wasko, and Samanta Cappella all won in straight sets at Nos. 2, 3, 5, and 6, respectively.
UH's only loss was at No. 4, where Bihag dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Peggy Bell. The Cougars (14-3) dropped their second straight match since reeling off 10 straight.
The Rainbow Wahine take the rest of the week off before hosting the NCAA Division II's top ranked team, Brigham Young-Hawai`i, Tuesday, April 17.
