TEMPE, Ariz. -
Lisa van Raalte scored four times for fourth-ranked Hawai`i but it wasn't enough as No. 1 Stanford knocked off the Rainbow Wahine, 16-10, in the 2007 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation semi-finals today at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
The match had a little bit of everything including a game time temperature of 101 and a 25-minute delay because of a dust storm in the second quarter.
With the loss, the Rainbow Wahine fall to 17-9 on the year and 2-1 in the MPSF Championship while the Cardinal improve to 25-1 and 2-0.
Stanford took the opening sprint and got the ball quickly inside and drew a 5-meter penalty which Christina Hewko converted. Amy Logan's lob shot at 6:34 tied it at one. However Hewko whipped in a power-play goal and Jacquelyn Gauthier hit from 7-meters out to give the Cardinal a 3-1 advantage. Lisa van Raalte's wrist shot and Kristy Bagnall's 6-on-5 goal tied it at three. Gauthier added her second goal with 17 seconds left, but UH drew a 5-meter penalty and Kelly Mason skipped it through the right side to tie it at four at the end of the first.
Stanford came out with three quick goals to begin the second. Then with 4:57 left in the second, play was halted for 25 minutes by a huge dust storm. When play resumed, Stanford picked up where they left off with Gauthier skipping in her fourth goal. Angela Turnbull powered her first goal through the left side on a 6-on-5. However, the Cardinal scored two more times to take a 10-5 lead at the half.
Stanford began the third with three goals before van Raalte answered with her second tally on a 2-meter lob.
Van Raalte back-handed in her third goal in the first 57 seconds of the fourth, but SU's Jessica Steffens took a rebound off a blocked shot by Meike De Nooy in midair and flipped it in to make it 14-7. De Nooy posted a match-high 11 saves. Turnbull added her second goal on a 4-meter shot, but SU's Heather West turned in a power play to answer. Emily Cox shoved in a 6-on-5 goal and van Raalte scored her fourth goal on another man-up attack to cap the scoring for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai`i takes on No. 3 USC who lost to No. 2 UCLA, 10-9, on Sunday for third place at 2:20 p.m. PST (11:20 a.m. HST).
