No. 4 UH Hammers No. 5 SDSU, 19-12 ,To Advance To MPSF Semifinals

MPSF Championship Central

TEMPE, Ariz. - Angela Turnbull scored five goals while Kelly Mason and Kristy Bagnall each tallied four apiece as No. 4 Hawai`i punched their ticket to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation semifinals tomorrow with an explosive 19-12 win over No. 5 San Diego State this afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The Rainbow Wahine improved to 17-8 on the year and 2-0 in the MPSF Championship while the Aztecs fall to 26-8 and 1-1.

UH took the opening sprint and Bagnall, who sat out yesterday's match, gave the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 lead on a 5-meter lob shot. Turnbull, with time expiring on the shot clock, hit another lob shot from 10 meters on UH's next possession. Jenna Schuster cut the deficit to one on a SDSU power play. Mason skipped in one from the left wing on a man-up situation to make it 3-1 UH. Turnbull and Mason each added their second goals as UH led 5-1 after the first quarter.

The Aztecs' Stacy Werner scored at 5:34 in the second quarter on a penalty shot then Anna Gonzales converted a man-up to make it 5-3. Bagnall then ripped a shot through the upper left corner of the cage on a 6-on-5 to regain a three-goal lead, but on SDSU next time down the pool Erinn Greenwood's lob shot barely made it over the outstretched arms of UH goalie Meike De Nooy to pull to within two, 6-4. Lisa van Raalte then was credited with a goal when Ryan Hanson-Swaner's shot was deflected off van Raalte to provide a three-goal cushion, 7-4, at halftime.

Mason pumped in her third goal on UH's opening possession in the third. SDSU's Schuster then scored three times in the quarter to keep the Aztecs close. However, two straight goals by Anna Sieprath, another pair by Bagnall and van Raalte's second goal of the match gave UH a 13-8 advantage heading to the final eight minutes.

The Aztecs' Werner picked up her second goal on a fast break. But UH scored on its next four trips down the pool on a penalty shot by Mason and three 6-on-5 goals by Turnbull. Schuster added a sixth and seventh goals in the quarter. Emily Cox and van Raalte scored to cap the scoring.

Hawai`i advances to the semifinals when it takes on No. 1 Stanford Saturday, April 28, at 2:20 p.m. PST (11:20 a.m. HST). The Cardinal defeated No. 9 UC Irvine earlier today, 17-5.
