LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine golf team (299-312-300=911) made a run at their first-ever Western Athletic Conference title, but ended up with a third-placed finish at the WAC Championship Wednesday. The WAC also announced their all-WAC teams with
Dale Gammie earning WAC Golfer of the Year honors.
Hawai`i was just one shot back of the lead after 15 holes of the final round. But the Rainbow Wahine had a couple of bad holes in the final three, dropping back to third place, five strokes behind WAC champion Idaho.
Individually, freshman Corie Hou (75-74-77=226) led the team, finishing fourth. Lisa Kajihara (76-79-72=227) tied for fifth, followed by Gammie (75-80-74=229), in a tie for ninth, Xyra Suyetsugu (74-79-77=230), in a tie for 12th, and Nancy Shon (75-84-79=238), in 30th.
Idaho took the team title and the automatic NCAA Regional bid at 42-over-par. San Jose State (+45) finished in second, followed by UH (+47), Nevada (+51), Fresno State (+55), New Mexico State (+69) and Boise State (+71).
SJSU's Erica Moston took the individual WAC title at one-over-par. She was followed by Idaho's Renee Skidmore and Laura Luethke (+8), Hou (+9) and three golfers at 10-over-par.
The Rainbow Wahine now await the NCAA Championships selection, which will take place on Monday, April 30, to see if they make the tournament as an at-large team.
