LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After a tough start on the first hole, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine golf team shot an opening-round 299 to hold the lead after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at the University Golf Course Monday.
On the first hole of the tournament, the five Rainbow Wahine golfers posted two bogeys, one double-bogey, one triple-bogey and a quadruple-bogey. But they regrouped quickly, finishing a combined four-over-par on the final 17 holes.
All five of UH's golfers finished the first round in the top 12, including four in the top six. Xyra Suyetsugu shot a 74, tying for fourth. Suyetsugu was five-over-par after the first two holes, but made a great recovery, shooting three under the rest of the way. Nancy Shon, who posted 17-consecutive pars after opening with a triple-bogey, Dale Gammie and Corie Hou, who had four birdies, all shot a 75 to tie for sixth, while Lisa Kajihara opened with a 76, tying for 12th.
The Rainbow Wahine hold the tournament-lead at 11-over-par. Fresno State is in second at 17-over-par, followed by Nevada and Boise State (+18), New Mexico State (+19), Idaho (+21) and San Jose State (+22).
