HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team defeated Division II powerhouse and 14th-ranked BYU-Hawai`i in its home finale, Tuesday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 7-10 on the year and is currently on a three-match winning streak.
UH jumped off to a great start by winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of freshman Andreas Weber and sophomore Sascha Heinemann edged Junyoung Kim and Chris Rice at the No. 1 position, 8-6. At No. 2, the team of senior Chad Faulk and sophomore Jeff Fitch breezed past A.J. Bartlett and Marvin So`onalole, 8-2.
In singles play, the Rainbow Warriors won five of the six matches. Weber, ranked No. 54, cruised past Bartlett at the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-1. Weber is currently on a five-match winning streak and has won 15 of his last 17 singles matches. The Huenfeld, Germany native is 23-6 overall and owns a 14-2 dual match singles record.
Heinemann, ranked No. 98, dropped Kim at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-2. Heinemann has posted a 21-6 singles mark, including a 12-3 dual match record this season, and has won 12 of his last 14 singles matches.
Faulk earned his fourth straight victory with a 6-3, 6-4 straight set triumph over Thomas Hladil at the No. 3 court. Senior Derrick Lajola won his second straight dual match by beating So`onalole at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-1. Fitch upended Rice, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6.
Hawai`i next travels to Boise, Idaho to compete in the 2007 WAC Championship, April 26-29.
