UH Wraps Up MPSF Slate With 15-10 Win Over Matadors

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Angela Turnbull scored a career-high six goals and Kelly Mason added five as the fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team downed No. 19 Cal State Northridge, 15-10, today at Matador Pool.

The Rainbow Wahine improved to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Matadors dropped to 12-16 and 0-9 in the MPSF. The nine league wins by UH matches a season-best.

The Matadors got five goals from Allison Brookes and four from Dayna Van Gorder. CSN goalie Jillian Stapf made 11 saves in the loss.

Brookes got going early, notching the first two goals of the contest and putting the Matadors up 2-0 midway through the first period. UH's Mason narrowed the lead to 2-1.

Lisa van Raalte, Mason and Turnbull scored three unanswered goals to give UH a 4-2 advantage. Northridge's Brookes drew a five-meter foul and converted the penalty shot. After UH's Ryan Hanson-Swaner countered with a goal at the 3:07 mark, the Matadors reponded with two unanswered goals from Van Gorder before the half to knot the score at five.

UH came out of halftime firing on all cylinders. The Rainbow Wahine collected goals from Mason, Kristy Bagnall and Turnbull in the first three and a half minutes of play, and added four more before the end of the quarter.

In the final period, the Matadors got as close as four, but Mason's penalty goal with five seconds remaining capped the scoring, 15-10.

The high-scoring match up was also a rough one, with 30 ejections whistled - 18 on UH and 12 on CSN. Four Rainbow Wahine and one Matador accumulated three ejections, resulting in their removal from the contest.

UH goaltender Meike De Nooy notched four saves on the afternoon. She currently leads the MPSF in saves per match.

Hawai`i finishes the regular season with a doubleheader at Cal Baptist on Saturday, April 14, with a 10:00 a.m. match against Hartwick and then take on the host Lancers at 11:30 a.m.
